Achievers Foundation & NDMA Commence Verification of Flood Victims to Receive Direct Cash Transfers in Bonthe District

Mattru John, Bonthe District, 7th March 2024 — The Achievers Foundation, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency, has commenced a comprehensive verification process for flood victims in Bonthe District who were affected by massive floods in 2021/2022. This initiative aims to accurately identify and assist individuals affected by the floods in various villages and chiefdoms across the district.

The verification process began with an engagement session at the District Council in Mattru Jong, where stakeholders were briefed about the objectives and procedures of the activity. Key attendees included the Deputy Chairman of the Council, the Chief Administrator and Deputy of the Council, the District Chair Lady, the Leader of the Farmers Federation, representatives from the Office of National Security in Bonthe, as well as staff members from both the Achievers Foundation and the National Disaster Management Agency.

The primary goal of the verification exercise is to meticulously assess and validate the beneficiary list provided by the National Disaster Management Agency. By cross-referencing this data with on-the-ground realities, the Achievers Foundation aims to compile an accurate database of individuals who are to benefit from this assistance.

Notably, this support has been made possible through funding from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), underscoring regional cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.

During the district council meeting, Chair Lady Madam Assiatu Conteh expressed gratitude towards the Achievers Foundation and the National Disaster Management Agency for their proactive approach to implementing this crucial verification process. She emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability throughout the entirety of the project, highlighting the need for equitable distribution of aid to ensure it reaches the affected victims.

She further urged the National Disaster Management Agency to explore additional mitigation measures to enhance resilience against future disasters in the district.

This support, which includes direct cash transfers and the provision of WASH items, aims to assist those most impacted by the floods in 2021/2022 across the country, ultimately contributing to their recovery and livelihoods.

The other affected districts set to benefit from this support are Moyamba, Pujehun, Kailahun, Port Look, Falaba, and the Western Area.
